Behind the character · 921–922 CE
The man who
wrote it down.
Ahmad ibn Fadlan was a tenth-century Muslim traveler and writer who joined an embassy sent from Baghdad by the Abbasid caliph to the king of the Volga Bulgars in 921–922.
On the Volga in 922, he encountered a group of Rus traders associated with the Viking world. His account records observations of their appearance, customs, trade, and a ship funeral—an extraordinary glimpse of the Viking Age through a visitor’s eyes.
It is one observer’s account of a particular encounter, rather than a portrait of every Viking community.

At VikingFest, Dominique’s portrayal brings this historical chronicler into our imagined Hedeby. The festival encounter is a creative interpretation.
